Default risk




Default risk

The risk that an issuer of a bond may be unable to make timely principal and interest payments. Also referred to as credit risk (as gauged by commercial rating companies).

The possibility of loss; the amount that one may lose when investing.

Issuer
A financial institution or other organization responsible for supplying credit cards, debit accounts, checks, electronic tokens, and so on.

Bond
Certificate, stating that the issuer is committing himself to repay the loan, including interest and other payments, to the holder.

Principal
The amount of a loan, which the borrower has to pay back when the loan matures; a person who engages a broker to buy and sell for him.

Interest
The amount of money a lender loans a borrower to pay for using the borrower's principal.

Deferred call
A provision that prohibits the company from calling the bond before a certain date. During this period the bond is said to be call protected.
