Sale An agreement between a buyer and a seller on the price to be paid for a security, followed by delivery. Security Piece of paper that proves ownership of stocks, bonds, and other investments. Short One who has sold a contract to establish a market position and who has not yet closed out this position through an offsetting purchase; the opposite of a long position.
