Negative carry
Negative carryA situation in which the cost of financing a securities or financial futures position exceeds the yield earned. RELATED TERMS-------------------------------------- Cost The opposite of revenue. An expense that reflects the price of purchasing goods, services and financial instruments. A cash cost means that cash is given up today to the purchase. Also, the purchase price of an investment, which is compared to the sale proceeds to determine capital gain or loss. Securities Saleable papers, traded on stock exchanges, that yield an income (dividend, interest, etc.). Futures Contracts covering the sale of financial instruments or physical commodities for future delivery on a commodity exchange. Position A market commitment; the number of contracts bought or sold for which no offsetting transaction has been entered into. Yield The rate of income an investor receives from a security; to produce or provide income. SIMILAR TERMS-------------------------------------- Negative amortization A loan repayment schedule in which the outstanding principal balance of the loan increases, rather than amortizing, because the scheduled monthly payments do not cover the full amount required to amortize the loan. Negative cash flow Occurs when spending in a business is greater than earnings. Negative convexity A bond characteristic such that the price appreciation will be less than the price depreciation for a large change in yield of a given number of basis points. Negative covenant A bond covenant that limits or prohibits certain actions unless the bondholders agree. Negative duration Occurs when the price of an MBS moves in the same direction as interest rates.
